Now Is the Time to Switch to Windows 11!

Windows 10 End of Support

With the exception of certain LTSB/LTSC Windows 10 edition versions, Windows 10 End of Support (EOS) is set for October 14, 2025. Consequently, following this date Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, security updates, and software updates from Windows Update for Windows 10. Over time, Windows 10 will become less secure due an increase in vulnerabilities in key components like Windows Defender Antivirus that protect against malware (e.g., viruses, spyware, worms). Switching to Windows 11 will ensure that necessary updates are installed, reducing opportunities for bad actors to compromise system security.

Windows 11 Compatibility

If a computer is currently running Windows 10, an easy way to check if it meets the requirements for Windows 11 is by using Microsoft’s PC Health Check application. This app does not, however, check for graphics card and display compatibility. Minimum system requirements for Windows 11 can be found on Microsoft’s website. Some notable requirements of Windows 11 that weren’t previously required in Windows 10 include computers needing to be UEFI and Secure Boot capable, as well as have Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0.

Obtaining Windows 11

Nonprofit organizations can obtain copies of Windows 11 Pro for a discounted rate (currently $16 per license) through TechSoup, a nonprofit network that offers software discounts to eligible nonprofits.

Why Now?

Ideally, it’s better to start the process sooner rather than later for multiple reasons. First, given that some computer hardware may be incompatible with Windows 11, there will potentially be increased demand for compatible computers as the deadline draws closer, causing prices to rise and making it more difficult to find desired hardware. If applicable, buying compatible hardware now will help to avoid these issues. Second, an earlier migration from Windows 10 to 11 will increase the amount of time available to manage unforeseen challenges like acclimating to a new user interface or learning new features.
