Deven Tompkins is one of our newest interns, majoring in cybersecurity at Old Dominion University and finishing in spring 2027. He came to us from the other side of the relationship: “I work at one of the non profits that the interns were working at and got the suggestion from them.” His favorite class so far has been Cybercriminology, taught by a professor who worked at the FBI before coming to ODU. “Seeing how behaviors on the internet and how certain laws involving computers have very strict codes was really nice.”
Ask him what makes him a good teammate and the answer starts with wanting to learn. “I’m a great teammate and coworker by showing a drive to learn more in this experience. I’m very easy to get along with and I’ve worked in team based environments in the past.” His first day is Monday, September 21 — so far he’s sat down with Tom Anderson.
What he’s looking forward to is meeting the team, getting acquainted with everyone, and absorbing as much knowledge from this experience as he can. After graduation he’d like to work in database systems management, helping people solve their problems, or in government cybersecurity “to help track down potential criminals from the net.” For fun, he’s out with friends, taking relaxing evening walks, or watching the Seahawks on Sundays. Over eleven years, IT4Causes has placed more than 100 interns with nonprofits that needed the help — and every member of last year’s graduating cohort walked into a job.
You can meet this year’s group at Tech4All 11.0 on Thursday, September 24, 2026, 5:30–8:00 PM, at St. Joseph’s Villa, 8000 Brook Road, Richmond. The theme is Tech With Purpose: Building the Next Generation of Tech Leaders Through Internships. Expect live demos, the premiere of a game our interns built, food, drink, and free parking.
Tickets are $10, and every one of them funds this program.
