Tom Anderson Joins Chamber Panel on Building Strong Nonprofit Boards

Strong nonprofit organizations begin with strong governance. On Wednesday, September 9, IT4Causes Executive Director Tom Anderson joins a panel of nonprofit and business leaders at the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce Monthly Luncheon for a discussion titled “Who’s Got a Seat at the Table? Choosing the Right Board Members.”

The conversation brings together nonprofit executives, consultants, and community leaders to explore what makes a board effective — and how organizations can recruit, prepare, and engage outstanding board members. Tom brings both perspectives to the table: he leads a nonprofit that works alongside dozens of nonprofit boards each year, and he has served as a nonprofit board chair himself.

The discussion is built for two audiences.

For nonprofit leaders:

  • Recruiting the right board members
  • Setting clear expectations before inviting someone to serve
  • Building balanced boards across skills, passion, and perspective
  • Common mistakes organizations make when recruiting
  • Building long-term engagement and accountability

For business and community leaders:

  • Finding a nonprofit that aligns with your interests and skills
  • How to approach an organization about board service
  • Questions to ask before accepting a position
  • Understanding fundraising, governance, and ambassador responsibilities
  • What lasting impact through board service actually looks like

A moderator will guide the panel through prepared questions, with panelists sharing real-world experience and building on one another’s answers. Audience questions follow as time permits. The goal is for everyone in the room to leave with practical ideas they can apply right away — whether they are building a board or looking for a meaningful place to serve.

Board governance sits close to the work IT4Causes does every day. Technology decisions, data stewardship, cybersecurity, and capacity planning all land on a board’s desk eventually, and the organizations that navigate them well tend to be the ones with engaged, well-prepared boards behind them. We are glad to be part of this conversation, and proud to join the Free Clinic of Powhatan, Chesterfield Food Bank Outreach Center, and Atlantic Union Bank as a Spotlight Sponsor of the event, with TowneBank serving as Registration Sponsor.
